Overcoming Failure

Framed in my office is a statement about the life of an American politician. It lists the failures that this man suffered:

  • He failed in business in ’32.
  • He failed to win a race for state legislature in the same year.
  • He again failed in business in ’33.
  • He lost his sweetheart to illness in ’34.
  • He suffered a nervous breakdown in ’36.
  • He lost a race for Congress in ’43.
  • And again in ’48.
  • He was defeated in a campaign for the U.S. Senate in ’55.
  • He lost the campaign for Vice President of the US in ’56.
  • He ran again for Senate in ’58 and lost.
And finally, in 1860, Abe Lincoln was elected president.
