The Critical First Day

One source claims that 31% of rookie employees quit the job within the first six months. Another estimates that it costs up to half the annual salary just to replace an employee whho quits.

We will not vouch for the accuracy of either of these two claims, but it seems clear that the best warehouse employers closely control the experience of on-boarding new workers. What do you hope your new hire will tell her/his spouse after returning from the first day at your company? Firms that handle that first day successfully have significantly results than the average firm.

Take a critical look at the first day. Could some of the energy sucking paperwork be handled earlier or later? One company has a member of senior management meet the newcomer and explain the company culture firsthand.
