There are three types of people who seem to be dedicated to wasting your time.
The monopolist is a long-winded person who talks without ever getting to the point. When this person strikes, explain that you will return the call. When you phone, start with “I have only five minutes right now, but tell me how I can help you.”
The crybaby never quits complaining. On rare occasions, the crybaby is ready to discuss solutions. When that happens, pay attention. Otherwise, neutralize this person by saying “I am sorry that you have trouble.”
The blindsider thrives on surprises. Ask for an agenda before starting a conversation with this person. When the blindsider moves in unexpected directions, bring things back by saying “I thought our agenda was to discuss.....”
