When you confront an employee who has made a mistake, the questions you ask make a difference.

If you start with “why” or “who”, your question might imply that you want to cast blame or make a judgment. Instead, begin with “what did you learn from that?” This makes the inquiry non-threatening.

All of us make mistakes, and the first response should be non-judgmental.
