Is Unlimited Connectivity
a Bad Practice?

Your cell phone can become your mobile office. If you are the boss, this might be a good practice. One successful warehousing executive provides his phone number to every client and urges any of them to call him at any hour if there is a serious problem. For him, unlimited connectivity is a symbol of superior customer service.

But should all your employees be expected to be in touch at any hour? In France, employers and unions created the “obligation to disconnect” for workers to be sure that there was no burnout. When connectivity contributes to stress, then corrective action is needed. One survey indicated that employees reported that their time was wasted when managers put too much on their plate and then demanded unlimited connectivity. Smart phones are not the problem. Abuse of employees time is the consequence of over-communicating.
