Manage Things, Lead People

There is a big difference between management and leadership. You manage things like budgets, inventories, trucks, and buildings. But when you deal with people, leadership is a necessary element. The skill sets are different. Furthermore, the mindsets are drastically different. Some people think you can manage people, and the results are usually unfortunate.

People get promoted because they did something good. An outstanding forklift operator is promoted to supervision because his or her skill and personality have attracted the attention of the senior staff. Sales people get promoted to salesmanagers because they are good at selling. An engineer is promoted to management because he or she produced some very effective designs. All of these individuals are promoted because they are good at what they do, not because they have skill as leaders. Whether they will develop leadership skills is a gamble. Leading and managing are two entirely different things.

Your position or title doesn’t make you a leader. Being a good manager doesn’t make you a leader.Managing every detail of your business andmakingmoney at it doesn’t make you a leader. Only one thing makes you an effective
