Beware of a
Culture of Silence!

The best leaders operate in a culture of participation, but some struggle with a culture of silence.

How would you answer these questions?

  • In the last three months, how many times has one of your employees openly disagreed with you in a group meeting?
  • How many times has someone presented an idea that you ignored?
  • How many times has someone in your staff meeting responded with a blank look when you asked for input?

If you have a positive response to any of these three, you need to recognize the need to create a more participative environment. The change starts with encouragement.

Ask for opinions at every meeting, and be sure your people know that you are eager to have their views. Work on improving your skill as a listener, recognizing that you should be listening rather than talking in most of your encounters with direct reports.
