Overcoming Micromanagement

Micromanagement is a bad habit, but it can be overcome.

It's a skill that needs to be developed because those who lack delegation skill will continue to micromanage. Understand that delegation is based on trust; if one of your direct reports cannot be trusted, career counseling is needed.

Communication is a critical part of delegation. The work will not be done properly unless the person doing it understands what you want and what you expect. Delegation is effective only when there are periodic audits to ensure accountability.

Start by delegating a small project and then force yourself to stand back until it is complete. With each new success, your level of trust in your team will grow.

After you develop strong delegation skills, micromanagement becomes unnecessary.
