Why do we need certification?

In the world of trade associations and professional societies, the rush to create certification became almost an epidemic. In a land where relatively few managers have college degrees, certification may be an important indicator that the worker is willing to open books and learn more about warehousing.

Does completion of that study offer proof that the individual will also be a skilled people manager? Does it guarantee that the individual is dependable and honest? Is it a sign of a very strong work ethic? Is it a
symbol of loyalty?

Some kind of measurement is good. Here are the things that are at least as important as certification:

  • Find out how the work is actually being done
  • Compare your performance with other companies
  • Compare your productivity to published work standards.
  • Focus on continuous improvement.
  • Try to get an outside perspective.
  • When you need capital, be prepared to provide the justification.
