How to be a Better Leader

Effective leadership is difficult because few leaders are born. Most successful leaders have learned how to be effective, and here are three ways to improve your leadership techniques and capabilities.

First, be sure that all decisions are based on facts. Always consider your choices in terms of possible bias. If your decision is challenged, can you justify it based solely on facts? Resist the temptation to make snap decisions. Objectivity earns the respect of your direct reports.

Second, instead of preaching or delivering monologues, encourage open dialogue from team members. When you are known as a good listener, your team will listen to you. Decisions are respected when they have been made after ample dialogue and even disagreement. Leaders develop good followers, and followers must believe that you hear them and care about their opinions.

Third, help those around you to feel secure even when you must provide guidance and criticism. Acting and speaking compassionately will allow the team to feel your support. When they know you have your support, they will listen to your advice.
