Onboarding: Good and Bad Experiences

Many people have a horrible memory of a first day on the job. You arrive at the workplace, than spend most of the day filling out forms, followed by the requirement to watch policy videos. Then you are shown to a work area that lacks the tools needed to start the job. Finally, your supervisor can’t be reached for questions until the following day.

Contrast this with a great experience. Before day one, you get a link to all the necessary forms so they can be completed at your convenience before coming to work. You spend your first day learning more about your organization, meeting teammates, and becoming familiar with your new work environment.

Look at the process that your organization uses. Is it a great experience, or one that is best forgotten? If it is less than ideal, when and how are you going to change it?

Keep in mind that during onboarding, and after, the best managers are good teachers.

Effective managers focus on teaching new work skills and habits. They don’t just supervise employees, they help them improve. Some middle managers are not outstanding leaders, but they are superb teachers.

Many of our most effective business organizations are noted for their skills in teaching and developing people. United Parcel Service (UPS) is just one example.
